About SOLSEEK

A permanent, searchable MP3 archive where the music lives in Solana transaction history.

What it is

SOLSEEK is a catalogue of MP3 files in the spirit of the old peer to peer music clients: a plain table, a search box, a player. The difference is where the bytes live. Each file is written into Solana mainnet transaction history, so it can be rebuilt by anyone with access to an archival RPC node, with or without this website.

The website keeps a small database only so the catalogue is fast to search. It never holds the only copy of a song.

SOLSEEK is an independent project and is not affiliated with the Soulseek network.

How an upload works
  • You connect a Solana wallet and pick one or many MP3 files. Title, artist, album, genre, year, description and cover art are optional.
  • The file is checked by its actual bytes, frame by frame. WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, ZIP, executables and anything else that is not MPEG Layer III audio is rejected, whatever the extension says.
  • The site shows the estimated SOL cost and asks your wallet for one approval for the whole batch.
  • The file is cut into roughly 4 KB records (Solana v1 transactions), each written to chain through the SPL no-op program. Index pages list the signatures of those records, and a root manifest holds the filename, metadata, size and the SHA-256 of the original file.
  • The server rebuilds the file from finalized chain history, checks the SHA-256 and the MP3 structure, and only then lists it. You are sent to the track page, or a results page for a batch.

The MP3 is never transcoded, recompressed or edited. A 320 kbps file comes back as exactly the same 320 kbps file, byte for byte. Lower bitrate MP3s are accepted and shown with their real bitrate.

The one approval, and what it can and cannot do

Solana normally needs a signature for every transaction, and a song is hundreds of them. SOLSEEK solves this without asking for any unusual permission:

  • Your browser creates a brand new one-time keypair that exists only for this upload.
  • You approve a single normal transfer that moves a fixed amount of SOL (the displayed cost plus a small safety margin and a refundable rent reserve) from your wallet to that key.
  • The one-time key signs all the data transactions on its own. Your wallet never pops up again.
  • When the upload ends, everything left on the key is sent back to your wallet automatically.
The key can only spend what you funded it with, which is the cap shown before you approve. It holds none of your other assets and has no authority over your wallet. SOLSEEK never asks for a seed phrase or private key. If the tab is closed mid upload, the page offers to return the leftover SOL next time you open it with the same wallet connected.

Honest limit: the cap is enforced by the amount of SOL on the temporary key, not by an on chain program. That is the strongest single approval design available to a plain wallet today.

Permanence, rights and reports

Data written to a blockchain cannot be deleted. Only upload music you own or have the right to share, and confirm that on the upload page. Every track has a Report button. Reported files are reviewed and can be removed from this catalogue, but the transactions themselves stay on Solana. Think before you archive.

SOLSEEK is only about uploading, archiving, searching, playing and downloading MP3 music. There are no comments, likes, follows or feeds.

The official $SOLSEEK token will be announced here. The address shown above is a placeholder until launch. The archive does not require the token to use.
